Sp1ke Image Translator privacy policy
Last updated: 25 October 2026 (v1.2.0) ยท Made by Sp1ke
Sp1ke Image Translator translates the text inside images on web pages. It is available for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. This policy explains exactly what it does with your data.
What stays on your device
- Images are never uploaded. The text in an image is read on your own computer by an OCR engine that is bundled inside the extension. No image, screenshot or page content is sent to the developer or to any server.
- Your settings (languages, look of the text, chosen sites) are stored with the browser's
storage.sync, so your browser can sync them between your own devices. The developer cannot see them.
- Saved translations (a cache so a page you reopen is instant) are stored in your browser's local IndexedDB. You can erase them with "Clear cache" in the extension.
What can leave your device
Only the extracted text is ever sent anywhere โ never the image.
- Chrome: translation first uses Chrome's built-in on-device Translator, and nothing leaves your device. Only if it cannot handle the language pair and "Allow online translation" is on (on by default, can be switched off in Behavior) is the extracted text sent over HTTPS to Google Translate (
translate.googleapis.com) or MyMemory (api.mymemory.translated.net).
- Firefox: Firefox has no built-in on-device translator, so the extracted text is always sent over HTTPS to Google Translate or MyMemory to be translated. Firefox asks for your consent to this ("website content") when you install the extension.
Those services receive the text and your IP address and handle them under their own privacy policies.
Read aloud uses the speech voices built into your browser or operating system. Most are on-device; some browsers also offer online voices (for example Chrome's "Google" voices), which send the text being read to the browser maker's speech service. You can choose the voice in Appearance โ Read aloud.
Nothing else is transmitted. Sp1ke Image Translator has no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no accounts. The developer receives no data.
Permissions
- Access to all websites: needed to find the images on pages you choose to translate and to download those image files so the text can be read. It only acts on pages where you press the button, use the right-click menu, or have chosen "always translate on this site".
- Context menu: adds "Translate this image" / "Translate the images on this page".
- Storage, offscreen, declarativeNetRequest: save settings, run the text reader, and let image downloads carry the page's own address as Referer (many image servers require it).
Your choices
Turn the extension off with its switch, set it to "Only when I ask", switch off online translation, clear the cache, or uninstall it at any time.
Children
Sp1ke Image Translator is a general-purpose tool and does not knowingly collect any data from anyone.
